Green-friendly homes for former barracks
PLANS for an eco-village of 252 homes have been unveiled for a former army barracks.
Developer ZeroC Holdings is proposing to build the environmentally-friendly homes at the Roussillon Barracks in Broyle Road, Chichester.
The developer is putting nearly 3m towards technology and various transport schemes in a bid to reduce the carbon footprint of the site and the need for residents to have a second car.
Bus passes will be subsidised for residents for the first three months, interactive information panels installed and a raft of other measures put in place to reduce energy bills.
If given the go-ahead, it would mean the city had a second eco-friendly community after plans got under way at Graylingwell last year.
Kim Slowe, managing director at ZeroC Holdings, said: 'We think it's an excellent project for Chichester.
'It's going to respect what we believe the architecture of Chichester to be, it's traditional in its appearance, but with very high technology behind it.'
The initiatives from the developer include the chance for residents to share a pool of electric cars for a set price per year.
Every home will be fitted with a smart panel which will display information about when the next buses and trains arrive, and what community organisations are up to.
Parking will be reduced to 1.5 spaces for each home.
Every home will cut water usage by 50 per cent by harvesting rainwater to use in toilets, washing machines and outside taps, as well as having a heating system run on wood pellets.
Houses will also be capable of using solar panels on the roof to generate energy.
