Group is launched after son stillborn

A mother who suffered the loss of a stillborn baby has set up a support group to help other families in the same situation.

Samantha Triggs was left devastated when doctors discovered that her unborn son, William, had died in the womb.

Although she carried the baby for nine months doctors believe he died as a result of the pregnancy diabetes that she suffered from.

Mrs Triggs, who has four other children, fell into a depression after the tragedy in 2006, but came through it. She now wants to help other mums and dads who may have been affected by a stillbirth.

The 36-year-old, from Abbas Green, Leigh Park, said: 'The whole experience was horrendous.

'Finding out William had died was the worst day of my life.

'I was pregnant again almost immediately afterwards and, looking back, I now realise that I didn't really have time to grieve for him.

'Afterwards I had bereavement counselling which helped and the hospital gave me leaflets but there was no dedicated support group locally.

'In a town as big as Havant, I can't be the only person who has been through it.

'One of the nurses put me in touch with Jean Higgins who ran a group some years ago and together we hope we can help other parents because a support group is badly needed.'

Mrs Triggs contacted the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society – known as Sands – and was given the go-ahead to run a group in Havant on their behalf.

Jean Higgins, who previously ran a group in the area, will be working with Mrs Triggs, who said: 'Hopefully, sharing experiences will really help.

'I know I've felt a bit daft with some of the things I've come out with.

'To anyone who hasn't lost a child they would probably sound very strange.

'I want people to be able to feel they can talk about it with each other at the group.'

The sessions will run at the Sure Start centre in Sandleford Road, Warren Park and an open day is being held between 10am and 1pm on August 28.
