Hampshire council supports rural housing drive
A council has joined a campaign calling on the government to keep rural families together by providing affordable housing.
The National Housing Federation's Save our Villages campaign is putting pressure on local authorities in rural areas to draw up action plans to address the housing needs of their communities.
East Hampshire District Council is backing the campaign, fearful that Britain is being plunged into terminal decline by a chronic shortage of affordable housing – with up to 650 country pubs and 400 village shops set to close over the next 12 months.
East Hampshire covers areas with well above average property prices where young people cannot get a foot on the property ladder. The lack of affordable housing in rural areas is also driving out younger people.
MPs from across the country were meeting in London yesterday to discuss the issue with the federation.
