Hampshire set for a broadband boost by 2015
HAMPSHIRE is set for faster broadband speeds after county council proposals were given the green light.
Hampshire will get £5m of the £8.4m the government set aside for the region.
The county council submitted a revised local broadband plan to Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) last year and the £5m will be matched by local public and private finance.
The BDUK is a government-backed initiative to ensure everyone in the country has access to broadband, and the funding will bring speeds of at least 24 megabits per second to more than 90 per cent of homes and businesses in the UK.
Council leader Cllr Ken Thornber said he was proud the county had secured funding, adding that it was ‘crucial’ for Hampshire’s prosperity. The council expects a contract will be awarded in December and says the project will be completed by the end of 2015.
