Hancock says 'no' to tuition fee proposals
Mike Hancock says he will not be voting for the government's proposals on university tuition fees.
The Lib Dem MP for Portsmouth South confirmed his stance on the coalition's announcement of a 9,000 cap following the controversial Browne review to lift it.
Mr Hancock, who signed a pledge with his Lib Dem colleagues to reject a fee increase, said: 'It's a big step in the right direction but the government hasn't done enough to make me vote for it and I won't.
'I'd like to see the fees capped at where it is now at 3,290, although I accept universities have to be more selective about the courses they are running. They have to be more realistic with students they are encouraging to go to university with regards to delivering jobs at the end of it.'
Aakash Naik, president of the University of Portsmouth Student Union, said he worried that 70 per cent cuts in teaching budgets and hiked fees would create a market place that could spell the end of departments and even universities.
