Havant residents are urged to go green

Residents are being urged to go green this summer as a recycling campaign gets under way this week.

Havant Borough Council is hosting a week-long campaign to encourage more people to think about what they throw away as part of 'BIG recycle week'.

To mark the BIG recycle week, launched on Monday, a new recycling bank has been placed in the car park of Havant Leisure Centre for residents to recycle any unwanted textiles, clothes and shoes.

All items placed in the textile bank will help to raise funds for The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

As part of the campaign the council's waste and recycling team will also be in Waterlooville town centre tomorrow advising shoppers on all aspects of recycling, from minimising waste to composting and garden waste collection.

Councillor David Collins, in charge of environment at the council, said: 'Most of us are aware of recycling and that it's a good thing to do, but not enough of us are doing it. Across Havant our recycling rate is at an outstanding 31 per cent but our aim is to increase this to 40 per cent by 2010. Many items that are thrown away can be recycled.'

Officers will be available from 9am to 4pm opposite Barclays Bank in London Road.
