Heavy rain causes problems on road and rail

Roads were closed today, homes flooded and motorists had to be rescued from marooned vehicles as heavy rain lashed the south.

A combination of flooding and an accident on the A3 northbound at Petersfield caused delays and lane closures at 7am.

All lanes reopened at 8.40am but there are still long delays in all directions.

There were also long delays on the A3(M).

Police are advising people to allow plenty of extra time for their journeys.

The A32 junction on the M27 near Wickham was one of the troublespots as torrential downpours continued.

The Junction 10 westbound exit slip was closed there and flood waters also blocked the A32 under the M27 bridge.

There was flooding on the B2166 Lower Bognor Road at Bognor and at Fontwell, the A29 was closed between the A27 & London Road.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said it had rescued several motorists from cars caught in flood water. At Purbrook, a couple were rescued from a van that became stuck in a swollen ford on Pigeonhouse Lane.

Trains between Fareham and Eastleigh were halted because of flooding on the line at Netley.

The Environment Agency issued flood warnings at Emsworth and Bosham, two of five such alerts across the area. Three homes in Selangor Avenue, Emsworth were flooded by water overnight. People in the area were advised by police not to make car journeys unless they were essential.

This morning there is flooding on Havant Road near Selangor Avenue, which is causing delays westbound approaching the A27.

At Wallington near Fareham, homes were evacuated amid fears of a major failure of the flood defences on the River Wallington.

Bridge Street in Titchfield has been closed off and there are reports that the road is knee deep with water.

Traffic is slow moving on the eastbound carriageway approaching junction 11 on the M27 because of delays around the roundabout.

Police advised motorists to take extra care with continued heavy rain forecast for today.
