Help is on offer for young Portsmouth drinkers
Young people who experience problems with booze are to get help from a specialist nurse.
The Safer Portsmouth Partnership is to spend about 45,000 on the new position – the first of its kind in the region.
The nurse will take referrals from the emergency department at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham where young people have turned up under the influence of alcohol.
Youths caught out in public with alcohol will also be targeted and the nurse will visit schools to offer advice and education on the dangers of drinking.
It is hoped the worker – funded by Portsmouth City teaching Primary Care Trust -– will be in place by September.
Alan Knobel, Safer Portsmouth Partnership substance misuse coordinator, said: 'The nurse will work specifically with people who have been identified as having issues with alcohol. (The position] will also involve offering advice and information about the effects of alcohol and they will look at the behaviour of young people.'
