Police have dropped an investigation into an alleged robbery at Horndean

POLICE say a van driver who claimed to have been ambushed by robbers near a Horndean supermarket had made it all up.

A 25-year-old van driver from Waterlooville claimed a car stopped abruptly in front of his vehicle and the passenger got out and robbed him of cash.

The incident was said to have taken place at about 1pm on Wednesday in Dell Piece West, Horndean. The van driver said he had been subjected to a violent road-side robbery on a roundabout when a dark blue car pulled over in front of him, forcing him to stop his white van.

He told police that the passenger of the car got out and demanded cash saying that, when he refused, he was punched and forced to hand over cash he had in his wallet before the car made a getaway towards the A3.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene and the man, who lives in Waterlooville, was treated for minor injuries.

But, a police spokeswoman said: ‘It has come to light no such offence took place. A 25-year-old man has been dealt with by means of a Community Resolution.’
