Hospital is givena dusting down over dirty wards

HEALTH officials were criticised for not ensuring wards were properly dusted.

Inspectors who paid an unannounced visit to three wards at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, said some areas had not been cleaned properly.

But no concerns were raised in relation to handwashing facilities, uniform and work-wear policies, auditing, cleaning arrangements or isolation facilities.

Patients and the public are informed about the prevention and recording of infections in line with the strict hygiene code that all healthcare providers must meet.

The report added: 'On inspection, we found no evidence that the trust has breached the regulations to protect patients, workers and others from the risks of acquiring a healthcare-associated infection '

Inspectors noted that rates of the hospital superbug MRSA were below average for a trust of its size.

Last year 23 infections of MRSA in patients' bloodstreams were recorded compared with 80 in the year 2006/7.

It marked a 71 per cent drop over three years and is well below the government-set target of 36.

In total, 184 cases of clostridium difficile were recorded in 2008/9 – a drop of 58 per cent in the same three-year period.

A Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust spokesman said: 'On inspection, the Care Quality Commission found no evidence that the trust had breached the regulations to protect patients, workers and others from the risks of acquiring a healthcare-associated infection.

'A small amount of dust was found which the trust is taking very seriously and it has put extra cleaning measures in place.'

Chief nurse Julie Dawes said: 'We are taking action across the hospital to further reduce the chances of healthcare-acquired infection.

'We are pleased to see that the commission noted our many hand-washing facilities and anti-bacterial hand-rub facilities that are situated around the hospital sites.'
