Jail for man who fraudulently claimed £37,000 in benefits

A 52-YEAR-OLD man has been jailed after fraudulently claiming more than £30,000 in benefits.

John Brookes appeared at Fareham Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to six offences including failing to declare to Gosport Borough Council or the Department for Works and Pensions, that he was working as a self-employed contractor.

He also made false representations on claim forms and his earnings were paid into a previously undeclared bank account.

In three years, Brookes, formerly of Privett Road and Vian Close, in Gosport, claimed £37,000 in a number of benefits.

He was sentenced to 26 weeks’ imprisonment for each of the offences, which are to be served concurrently.

He must also pay back the money in full.
