Jobs safe after £309m MOD/BVT deal

Up to 120 jobs have been safeguarded at Portsmouth Naval Base in a £309m defence deal.

The Ministry of Defence and shipbuilder BVT Surface Fleet have signed a contract for the service of the Type 45 destroyers.

The seven-year contract announced yesterday < Weds> will support the six Daring class ships to be based in Portsmouth.

Minister for defence equipment and support, Quentin Davies, said: 'As builders of the Type 45s, BVT bring the in-depth knowledge that will assure the high quality support so essential to the delivery of this capability.

'The contract is expected to sustain around 120 jobs, primarily in Portsmouth, and many more with supply chain partners across the country.

'Type 45 is setting the standard for the modern Royal Navy, combining state of the art power and propulsion, a world class weapons system and modern accommodation.'

Alan Johnston, chief executive of BVT Surface Fleet, said: 'This contract demonstrates a new and innovative approach to providing the support that the ships and sailors of the Royal Navy need and deserve.

'The key requirement for Type 45 Support is not only to ensure the ships are available when required but to reduce the costs of supporting them through life.

'Working more closely in partnership with our customer and our major partners will ensure the navy is better able to deliver its operational commitments around the world.'

Under the contract terms BVT will co-ordinate all aspects of support for the ship including maintenance, supply chain management and planning.

The firm will act as a single point of contact, taking away the need for the ship to contact multiple agencies.
