Jobs under threat at firm's Gosport base

Jobs in Gosport are under threat after pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced cuts would be made after taking over rival Wyeth.

Research and development activities will now be conducted at just five main sites and nine units around the world. The move means the company's operations at Gosport will be discontinued.

A spokesman for the company said: 'As part of the consolidation of research sites, Pfizer will reduce research and development activities at some of its sites.

'As a result of these changes, Pfizer will reduce its global research and development square footage by 35 per cent.

'While these changes are expected to bolster productivity and reduce costs, they will result in staff reductions.'

No specific numbers of staff cuts have been given.
