Keeping it in the family
Two brothers who can trace their family tree to Nelson are serving in the navy in the Arabian Gulf.
Lieutenant Commander Chris Nelson and his brother Philip have teamed up in the Portsmouth minehunter HMS Atherstone.
Petty Officer Philip, from Gosport, is a mine warfare specialist on board, in charge of the operations room in the ship.
And he has been joined by his 38-year-old brother, who recently took command of the ship. 'This is the first time in 15 years that we have served in the same ship together,' said Chris. And it's the first time I've seen Phil at work!' he joked. 'I'm extremely impressed and proud of my little brother.'
The family link is about to be broken, though, as Philip is due to fly back to Gosport for the christening of his baby son Alfie.
He lives with his wife Charlotte and other son Dylan.
The brothers can trace their family tree back to the navy's most famous hero.
They are descended from Admiral Lord Nelson's grandfather, William.
Chris joined the navy in 1991 and Philip joined in 1994, and are now working in a crew of 45 in Atherstone.
The ship uses sophisticated sonar equipment to find underwater hazards that might be dangerous to shipping.
The crews rotate out of Portsmouth's Hunt class minehunters, spending six to eight months in the Gulf before returning home.
