Kids hope for a step in the right direction
A pre-school is hoping to win a share of the £10,000 on offer in our Great We Can Do It Charity Giveaway.
Staff are bidding for cash to improve care for the 45 children aged between two and five who attend Steady Steps Pre-School in Rowner, Gosport.
They need to raise 2,500 to create a sensory room for the children, and hope our Charity Giveaway will provide the cash boost they so desperately need.
The money would help pay for specialist lighting, blackout blinds, a light projector, bubble lamp and even a miniature water wall and soothing soundtracks to be played to the youngsters.
Manager Julie Pickthall, who nominated the Copse Lane pre-school, said: 'The culture of today's busy society inadvertently creates a stressful way of life for a lot of young children.
'When some children arrive at pre-school in the morning they may have already been up for several hours, spent time with a childminder, been on the school run to drop off older siblings and then face a session with 25 other children.
'This room would provide us with an environment which all children can access. A sensory room will give these children the opportunity to feel calm, relax and de-stress.
'They will then be in a better state of mind to focus and concentrate which is essential for their overall learning and development.
'They will be more tolerant of their peers – thus promoting more acceptable social behaviour such as sharing, cooperation and turn-taking.
'The room would also promote the overall development and wellbeing of children with additional needs such as a visual or hearing impairment.'
The News has 10,000 to give away. We've split the money into two awards of 2,500, three lots of 1,000 and four of 500. That should mean charities big and small can benefit from our giveaway.
The nominations for our charity giveaway close on Friday, November 28, and then our judges will decide which charities will share the cash.
