Kids in the pink for a starring role on stage

A group of children from Waterlooville became music stars for the night when they rocked the stage at a sold-out gig at the weekend.

Popular tribute act The Spirit of Pink Floyd Show had asked for a local group to join them on stage during their show at The Kings Theatre in Southsea.

At short notice, performers from the Waterlooville-based alternative dramatic arts academy Tadaa stepped in to portray disgruntled, rebellious schoolchildren during the 1979 hit Another Brick In The Wall.

Bryony Rose, principal of the academy, said: 'I received a call from the Kings Theatre a few weeks ago asking if we could do it. It's been a bit hectic organising it all and the kids have been practising really hard to get it all right but they were fantastic.

'They were a bit nervous before going on stage but afterwards they were ecstatic. For a lot of the younger pupils it was their first time on stage and they absolutely loved every minute of it.'

Bethany-Grace Devine was one of the performers on stage at Saturday night's show.

She said: 'It was amazing, the best experience I've ever had. We did a dress rehearsal earlier in the day with the band and they gave us some advice and pointers which we took away and learnt before we went on later.'

The 16-year-old, who studies performing arts at Highbury College, added: 'After we came off stage we had to be quiet because the band were still playing but as soon as we got to our dressing room we were screaming and jumping around. We are all so proud at what we've achieved. Most of us have become really close friends out of this.'

Sandra Smith, marketing manager at the Kings, said she was thrilled to see local children taking the theatre by storm. 'They absolutely loved it. Not only did they get to appear on The Kings Theatre stage when it was a full house, they got to perform with a band of this calibre.

'It's something they will never forget. Their parents were in the audience and they were all proud as punch. It was a great evening.'
