Latvian 'billiards' arrives in Portsmouth

A LATVIAN man is looking for players to establish his home country's billiards-style game in Portsmouth.

Uldis Ramjancevs has hired out a room in Buckland Community Centre to play the game novuss, which is the national sport in Latvia.

It is similar to snooker or pool as players use cues. But they use the cues to push discs into pockets instead of balls. The winner is the first to sink all eight discs.

The game has spread beyond Latvia and Estonia with federations set up in America, Canada, Germany, Portugal and Spain where the game is also particularly popular with wheelchair users.

Mr Ramjancevs wants to set up a club in Portsmouth.

He said: 'When I was a teenager everybody used to play novuss in Latvia. Neighbours used to come together to play. I'm looking for more people to play.'

The novuss club meets every Wednesday from 10am to 11am at Buckland Community Centre in Malins Road.

Contact Mr Ramjancevs on uldis@novuss.co.uk or 07531 353061.
