Level 42 open a fancy dress Bestival

Considering the advance weather forecast and Bestival's fantasy fancy dress theme, one might have expected to be greeted by what appeared to be a battle scene straight out of Lord of the Rings.

But, for the first day at least, the rain held off for the 50,000 who have descended on the Isle of Wight for the music festival.

Now in its seventh year, Bestival is well established and considered by many to mark the end of the Summer festival season.

The Island's own Level 42 opened proceedings on the main stage yesterday, and embracing the fun they were decked out in their finest 70s funk threads.

Hip hop star Dizzee Rascal finished last night's main stage set with number one pop hits including Bonkers and Dance Wiv Me.

Revellers are now looking forward to headlining sets by The Prodigy and Flaming Lips as well as appearances by Rolf Harris and Roxy Music, among many more.

Chris Pillinger, 33, from Shirley, Southampton, said: 'This is my first Bestival, I've been to Glastonbury before, and so far this is shaping up pretty well.

'There's a lot of things I'm still looking forward to.'

Today will see thousands put on fancy dress for the now traditional parade.

Matt Horne, from Gavin and Stacey, was mingling with the crowds and said: 'I love Bestival and I've been here quite a few times before. I'm really looking forward to Richie Hawtin and The XX.'

Nicky Medill from Arbroath added: 'its absolutely brilliant, this is a really eco-friendly festival and that's great.'
