Lie detector expert admits to lying over speed ticket

As a TV lie detector expert, Bruce Burgess knows how to spot a fib.

But when he tried to lie himself to get out of a speeding ticket and points on his licence, he was quickly found out.

The 65-year-old, who regularly reveals untruths among guests on the Jeremy Kyle Show, was snapped breaking the 30mph limit by a speed camera in Anglesea Road, Landport, Portsmouth.

Instead of owning up, the polygraph expert lied to police and claimed he wasn't the driver.

But he was found to be lying and has now admitted perverting the course of justice.

Portsmouth's transport chief, Cllr Lynne Stagg, said he shold have faced up to the situation. She said: 'He's a very silly man. Anybody who falsifies information is incredibly stupid.

'I can imagine, being in his position, if he had made his career based on telling the truth and he has suddenly found himself in this situation it could have been pure panic.

'If he had accepted it the penalty he may now face may not have been so severe.'

Burgess is a familiar face on UK TV screens, and is regularly employed to conduct polygraph tests - also known as lie detector tests - for chat shows including ITV1's Jeremy Kyle Show and the UK production of The Jerry Springer Show.

Burgess has also carried out checks on guests for The Trisha show and ITV1's This Morning.

He is an expert at using polygraph lie detectors to trace changes in a person's condition during questioning such as breathing, blood pressure, pulse rate, movement and skin resistance - which could indicate they are not telling the truth.

He also conducts tests to cover allegations of unfaithfulness, theft, sexual abuse and confirmation of innocence.

Burgess, from Leatherhead, Surrey, was filmed breaking the limit in a Jaguar XK8 on August 31.

However when he was asked by police to provide information on who was driving the car at the time of the offence, Burgess lied.

He pleaded guilty to submitting bogus details in response to a request for driver information under section two of the Road Traffic Offences Act 1988.

Addressing Burgess at Portsmouth Crown Court, Judge Peter Henry, presiding, warned: 'Perverting the course of justice is a serious matter so I will ask the probation service to consider all the options.'

Burgess was due to be sentenced today.

NOT THE FIRST STAR TO BE SNAPPED

Former Pompey defender Noe Pamarot was fined 250 and given three penalty points for driving at 36mph on Anglesea Road in October 2008.

TV quiz show host Anne Robinson was given a six-month driving ban after being clocked doing 43mph in August 2007.

Harry Redknapp was fined 60 and given three penalty points for doing 38mph on the stretch in April 2008.
