Like father, like daughter, for new face
THE only new face on Fareham Borough Council today is following in a family tradition.
Conservative councillor for Titchfield Tiffany Harper is the daughter of the borough's first alderman, Malcolm Harper.
The late Commander Harper OBE became the first person to be granted the honorary position in 2003.
He was a well-known face in the borough, serving 15 years on the council for Titchfield on a variety of committees as well as being mayor in 1991/92.
Miss Harper won the seat, which was vacated by Francis Devonshire who stepped down to spend more time with his family.
It was the first time she had run for any political office and she won convincingly with a majority of more than 1,200 over her Lib Dem challenger Jennifer Chaloner.
The 37-year-old said: 'I'm just looking forward to following in dad's footsteps, and his good work.
'I will obviously be carrying on the work that Francis and my fellow Titchfield councillor, Connie Hockley, have achieved, and do my best for the people who have voted for me.'
Tory council leader Sean Woodward added: 'It's lovely to have Tiffany on the council.
'Her father was a great friend of mine, and I was very happy when she agreed to stand.
'Her father would be very proud of her.'
