Lollipop man dies after Waterlooville crash

A LOLLIPOP man has died after being hit by a car in Waterlooville.

The 82-year-old man was in collision with a Nissan Micra on the junction of Tempest Avenue and Cornelius Drive at about 3.05pm today.

The man was taken by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital with life-threatening head injuries but died a short while later.

Tempest Avenue was closed off by emergency services to allow the air ambulance to land. The road was not re-opened until around 7pm.

Police said the man, who is from Waterlooville, was working at the time and was wearing reflective clothing.

The car driver, a 21-year-old woman from Cowplain, was uninjured.

She has been taken to Waterlooville police station for questioning.

Joel Hayes, 19, of Sonnet Way, Waterlooville, said: ‘He was such a lovely guy and I had known him for about four years.’

Inspector Dean Gower, of Hampshire Constabulary, said: ‘At around 15.05pm today in Tempest Avenue an 82-year-old male was in collision with a Nissan Micra driven by a 21-year-old woman.

‘Both the driver and the pedestrian are local to the Waterlooville area. The pedestrian was taken to Southampton General Hospital with life-threatening head injuries, where he unfortunately later died from his injuries.

‘The driver was arrested at the scene and has subsequently been released on police bail.’

Any witnesses are asked to call Hampshire Constabulary’s Road Death Investigation Team at Eastney on 101 quoting Operation Meadowlark.
