Lusty heads to the Arctic

BUSY HMS Illustrious

BUSY HMS Illustrious

HMS Illustrious will leave Portsmouth tomorrow for the Arctic Circle.

The fleet flagship will be away for eight weeks preparing for her role as the UK’s on-call helicopter and commando carrier later this year.

On her way north during the build-up to the exercise, Lusty will train with Army Apache strike helicopters and Royal Navy Sea King choppers.

The Nato exercise, led by the Norwegian armed forces, is vital in ensuring UK troops retain their ability to deploy worldwide, the navy said.

The 20,000-tonne warship is due to pass the Round Tower in Old Portsmouth at about 2.15pm.
