Man arrested for double stabbing in car bomb drama

A man held over a double stabbing reportedly told police there was a bomb hidden in a car.

Police were called to a house in Warfield Avenue in Waterlooville at about 3.30am yesterday where they found a man and woman suffering from stab wounds.

A 53-year-old woman was stabbed in the neck while a man of the same age was stabbed in the shoulder.

Police arrested a 49-year-old man in connection with the attack.

It's believed he then told officers there was an explosive device in a car parked in nearby Amethyst Grove.

The navy bomb disposal unit was called out to investigate, but the claim turned out to be false.

The car was returned to the street yesterday by police.

The man arrested remains in custody.

Both victims were taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham. The man was discharged yesterday while the woman was still being treated.

Her injuries are not life-threatening,

Police spokeswoman Katie Earnshaw described it as an 'isolated incident'.

She said: 'It (the report of a car bomb) came as a result of the investigation into the stabbing. We were handed this information.

'The navy bomb disposal unit did a risk assessment, they carried out an investigation and officers searched the car. There was nothing there. There wasn't any cordon put up.'

Police carried out door-to-door inquiries in both Warfield Road and Amethyst Grove.

Martin Roberts, 26, who lives in Amethyst Grove, had originally called the police to a house in the street - believed to be where the arrested man lives - because of loud music.

He said: 'At about 2am loud noise was blaring from the house.

'It woke my son up. So I went to see what was going on.

'The front door was open. I went in there and he wasn't there.

'I just called the police.

'They came round and took a statement and looked around the house.

'They told me nothing until this morning when I found out that two people had been stabbed. It's very bizarre.'

Police told him the arrested man had claimed there was a bomb in the car.

Neighbours in Warfield Road described the incident as 'unusual'.

A 45-year-old neighbour, who lives in Warfield Road, said: 'I heard a man shouting but I didn't go out and look.

'I thought maybe the police are dealing with it.

'Then I saw somebody being taken to the ambulance.

'There were forensic officers there until the early hours of this morning.'

Steve Lovatt, 38, who lives just opposite where the incident happened, added: 'Last night we didn't hear anything.

'This street is normally so quiet, it's unreal. Sometimes we have a few rowdy kids down here on their way back from the pub.

'But apart from that there's nothing. It's deadly quiet around here normally.'
