A man has appeared in court after a raid on a betting shop in Havant.

The robbery happened between 7.40pm and 8pm on Wednesday, January 30 at the Coral bookmaker in Barncroft Way, but police only released details today..

Detectives said a man entered the betting shop and showed a knife to a member of staff before asking him to put money in a bag.

The suspect then climbed onto the counter and took the money himself before leaving the shop and walking in the direction of Havant town centre.

Detective Sergeant Barbara Hamilton said: ‘A man has been arrested and charged in connection with this offence but we are still keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident, or who can provide information.

‘This is a serious offence in which a knife was used to intimidate a member of staff.

‘There were a group of youths outside the store at the time of the incident and I am very keen to speak with these young people as they may have seen something relevant to the investigation.”

She said that anyone with any information is asked to contact Havant CID on 101 or call the charity Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously.

Police said that Mark Anthony Hynes, 36, from Priorsdean Crescent in Havant had been charged with robbery and had appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates Court on Saturday, February 2 where he was remanded in custody.
