ARMED police closed off part of a Hampshire village before arresting a man for making threats to kill.

They said that motorists should find alternative routes as officers dealt with an incident believed to be a siege in Selborne, north of Petersfield.

Witnesses told how armed police had arrived in the village early today and surrounded a house near to the school.

In a statement, Hampshire Police said: ‘Police have been dealing with an ongoing incident at an address on Selborne Road, Selborne.

‘Police attended the address in the early hours of Wednesday, March 13, due to concerns about a man inside the house.

There was no one else inside the property.

‘The B3006 was closed from its junction with the A31 at Alton and the A3 at Greatham. ‘

A police spokesman added that because of its proximity to the incident, Selborne Church Of England Primary School, in School Lane would be closed.

Inspector Paul Markham, said: ‘I would like to thank the community for their cooperation and understanding with this matter.

‘Roads have now been reopened and the school have been advised.”

Police said that a 50-year-old man from Selborne has been arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill.

During the incident the B3006 was closed by the junction of the A31 at Alton and the A3 at Greatham.

Selborne is famed as the home of the 18th century naturalist Gilbert White. There is a museum dedicated to him in the village.
