Man in court over terror threats
A postman accused of conducting a four-year terror campaign by sending letters containing white powder and racist threats appeared in court today.
Jefferson Azevedo, 45, is also accused of planting a hoax bomb on a bridge over the A27 in Hampshire.
During a brief hearing at City of Westminster magistrates' court District Judge Timothy Workman committed his case to Southwark Crown Court.
Azevedo, of Langley Road, Portsmouth, faces nine charges under counter terrorism legislation.
He also faces nine further charges of sending letters containing racist abuse.
An investigation by Hampshire Police discovered more than 150 letters had been sent to politicians and other high profile figures between 2003 and 2007.
Azevedo, who spoke only to confirm his name and date and birth, was released on conditional bail.
