Man made fortune selling 'anarchist' terror guidebook

A Portsmouth man faces jail for selling information from Al Qaeda on how to carry out terrorist attacks.

Terrance Brown produced a CD entitled The Anarchist Cookbook at his home in Whitworth Road, Copnor, Portsmouth, Winchester Crown Court heard.

He sold copies around the world, making tens of thousands of pounds, on his website anarchist-cookbook.com. The site has since been taken down by the police.

The 46-year-old gathered information from the Al Qaeda Training Manual and the Mujahideen Poisons Handbook to form part of his own guide.

The CDs, which he sold for 35 dollars for a set of two, provided information on how to make home-made bombs and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Prosecutor Parmjit Cheema said Brown had admitted selling the material.

She said: 'It's accepted that the breadth and depth of the collection is an extremely large collection - indeed the largest that has been collected in this jurisdiction of such material.

'The profits from this business that he engaged in were in the tens of thousands of pounds.'

Brown, who lives with his partner, had been due to stand trial for up to six weeks at Portsmouth Crown Court.

But after a day and a half of legal arguments he changed his pleas at the last minute.

He pleaded guilty to seven charges, all under the Terrorism Act, of collecting information and making a record likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism between 2003 and 2006.

He produced updated versions of his guide each year, the court heard.

Three other charges, relating to the distribution of the material, were ordered to lie on the file. The maximum sentence for the offences is 10 years.

Judge Geoffrey Grigson said: 'The fact that I am granting him bail and ordering reports is absolutely no indication of the sentence the court will pass when the day comes and he must understand that.'

The judge adjourned the case for sentencing on June 2 at Winchester Crown Court.

As he left court Brown refused to comment, saying: 'I don't think it would be in my interest to say anything.'
