Man airlifted to hospital following crane incident

A man has been airlifted to hospital after the crane he was working on toppled onto a container ship in a Hampshire port.

Hampshire Police where called just before 5.30am this morning following reports that a man working in the cab of a gantry crane had been seriously injured after one of the main jibs of the crane came away and toppled onto a container ship below.

The man, who is believed to be in his 30s, has received life threatening leg injuries, following the industrial accident in Dockgate 20, Southampton.

He was airlifted from the scene by Coastguard helicopter then taken by road to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and South Central Ambulance have also been in attendance at the scene.

The Health and Safety Executive has been informed, the cause of the accident is unknown at this stage, and an investigation has commenced.
