Man is sent to prison for failed jewellers robbery

A MAN who helped organise an attempted robbery at a jewellery shop has been jailed.

Timothy Hewett, 25, was involved in the planning of a raid at RL Austen, North Street, Chichester.

Chichester Crown Court heard he bought the sledgehammer that was used in the raid by one of the three men, who were arrested shortly afterwards, and later sentenced to three and a half years in prison each.

He was also found to have followed their getaway van to and from the city in his car.

The three men, Miles O’Hanlon, Stephen Dovey, and Isaac Yassa, rode to the front of the shop on BMX bikes on June 3, 2010, and began attacking the window with a nail gun and a hammer before being chased off by police officers.

Judge Claudia Ackner said: ‘I accept what has been put forward by your counsel – the part you played in Chichester was peripheral to the raid.

‘You lent support by way of the use of your car, whether you were in it or not.’

Hewett, of Warwick Close, Holmwood, near Dorking in Surrey, was jailed for two years and 11 months.
