Meanwhile bid keeps people guessing

The potential to make big money from Pompey's stadium development is a key reason why a mystery consortium wants to buy the club, it is claimed.

But if the shops are not included, the club is likely be a far less attractive proposition for any potential owners.

As reported in The News on Monday, a group of South African and UK businessmen are said to be thrashing out an offer to present to Pompey owner Sacha Gaydamak.

Mike Makaab, pictured right, managing director of the soccer division of Prosport International, a sports management company, says he is involved in bringing the parties together.

He said: 'The new stadium development is of definite interest and the possible business opportunities which could come around the new stadium,' he said.

'Discussions have been ongoing and the parties are putting together their offers.'

Speaking to The News yesterday, he confirmed that a group of South African and UK businessmen were interested in buying the club, but the new stadium plans were a key element in making Pompey an attractive target.

'During the next fortnight there is a very good chance that an offer for Portsmouth Football Club will be placed on the table,' he said.

'There have been ongoing discussions with the owner of the club. By next Monday we should have a clear idea of what is going to happen.'

Mr Makaab, who refused to name the consortium members, added: 'They see potential in the fact that Portsmouth is the only Premiership club in that part of England. Also, there has been a good feeling between the owner of Portsmouth and the potential investors.

'It is a bit premature to think about plans for the club, they are just looking at the deal now. They realise that Portsmouth has been succesful as a club and they would want that success to continue.'

Mr Makaab said a number of meetings had taken place between the football club and the consortium, both in Portsmouth and in London.
