A MEETING due to be held tonight over plans for a Ben Ainslie sailing base in Old Portsmouth has been cancelled due to the number of residents who turned up to see the Olympian give a presentation about the proposals.

Sir Ben wants to base his 2015 America’s Cup sailing team in the city, which would see a large new headquarters built on The Camber in Old Portsmouth.

Tonight hundreds of people tried packing out the room in the Royal Naval Club and Royal Albert Yacht Club where the event was to be held, but it was decided on health and safety grounds it couldn’t go ahead.

City leaders are now trying to rearrange the meeting for next Monday in another location, before Portsmouth City Council’s planning committee decides whether the base should get planning permission.

Sir Ben told The News: ‘It’s great to see that the residents are so passionate about the area they live in.’
