Meeting my hero Kanu was a dream come true

With a beaming smile, terminally-ill Pompey fan David Godbold's dream came true when he got to meet FA Cup goal hero Kanu.

The 20-year-old – who may only have a few months to live – jumped for joy after witnessing his team's historic FA Cup win.

But he was again on top of the world when he got the chance to meet Pompey captain Sol Campbell and striker Kanu at Fratton Park.

David, who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, hugged and chatted to Kanu, whose goal it was which won the FA Cup on Saturday.

The Nigerian star said it was people like David who inspired him to continue working hard for his charity – the Kanu Heart Foundation. He told The News: 'It's something that touches the heart.

'Even seeing David now, I want to do more and I hope the message goes out to everybody that we can do more to help.'

David, from Heritage Way, Gosport, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukae-

mia at the age of 10 and went into remission twice.

Tragically, the disease returned last April and David – who has been a season ticket holder at Pompey since he was 10 – had to give up his seat because of a high risk that he would develop an infection from being exposed to large crowds.

He had a bone marrow transplant last September but it didn't work. There is nothing more doctors can do but give him medication to control the pain.

David also has life-saving blood transfusions at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cos-

ham, three times a week.

But he managed to make it to Wembley to see his heroes lift the FA Cup after Pompey gave him two tickets.

David, who met the Pompey players during Kanu's charity fund-raising match on Monday, said seeing Pompey lift the FA Cup and meeting his idols had been the 'best days of his life'. He added: 'I've been a Pompey fan all my life. I knew they were going to win the FA Cup and they didn't disappoint.'
