Meeting place gives VIPs a big welcome

PART of a church has been officially reopened after a £650,000 refurbishment.

The community hall area at the back of the United Reformed Church in North Street, Havant, has been transformed after nine months of work.

Havant mayor Jackie Branson, town MP David Willetts and more than 200 people turned out to see the new rooms, named the Havant Meeting Place.

Before the official ribbon cutting the Rev David Bending, a former church member, led a service of dedication in the church.

Church treasurer David Smith said: 'It was a tremendous team effort to complete this project on time and within budget.

'The final score is here for all to see.'

The church is already used by groups including Beavers, Cub Scouts and Guides and members are hoping other local groups will get involved.

Pat Pile, lettings secretary, said: 'We are looking forward to welcoming both old friends returning as well as making our premises available to new hirers. There has already been interest shown by a number of groups.'
