Milan pleased club's back to original plan for Fratton Park

Former club chairman Milan Mandaric has welcomed Pompey's plan to redevelop Fratton Park.

Mr Mandaric spent a long time working on plans to redevelop the stadium and increase the capacity.

So after plans to build grounds at The Hard and Horsea Island, Mr Mandaric feels going back to the original scheme is the best thing the club can do.

He said: 'It's a great idea. I worked on that for a long time.

'I always believed we needed to extend the stadium.

'I'm delighted to hear that – it's great news. But now I just hope that it happens.'

Mr Mandaric took over the club in 1998 and he originally announced plans to redevelop Fratton Park back in May 2003, when the club was promoted to the Premier League.

The proposal stated that the club would spend 26m on the redevelopment with plans to increase the capacity to 28,000, followed by another increase to 36,000.

In April 2006, Mr Mandaric announced that work would begin on the new stadium in the summer.

But it never began and he left the club in September that year, after selling it to Sacha Gaydamak.

Mr Mandaric has since moved on to become chairman at Leicester City.
