Minehunter off on bomb mission
Families gathered at Portsmouth's Round Tower to wave goodbye to HMS Quorn for five months.
With flags flying high, the Portsmouth-based minehunter left the harbour to join a Nato mission in the North Atlantic and Baltic Sea.
The vessel, which will work with minehunters from six other nations, will be on the lookout for the many Second World War bombs still floating off the coast of France and Belgium.
Quorn is set to visit 11 ports during her deployment, including Ponta De Portuga in the Azores, New York, Bermuda, and Kiel in Germany.
Her commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander Tim Neild, said: 'I am delighted to be deploying to take up our role within the Nato Mine Countermeasures Group.
'Since returning from the Gulf in January, our main effort has been the regeneration of the ship and making the crew ready for this important task.
'There is a real buzz of excitement around the ship, since this deployment presents a fantastic challenge for my ship's company to operate on both sides of the Atlantic.'
