More cases of swine flu in Hampshire

Eight more swine flu cases have been confirmed in Hampshire, The News can reveal.

Latest figures show 26 people have been diagnosed with the virus.

Health officials are under orders not to reveal their exact locations due to strict patient confidentiality rules and fears of repercussions for patients.

However, as reported in The News, at least two people in our area have contracted the bug. One is a worker at Langstone Technology Park and the other works at space craft makers Astrium in Anchorage Park. Both are being treated at home and are expected to make full recoveries.

Residents are now urged to make 'flu friends' to minimise the spread of infection.

Mel McKeown, head of communications and engagement at NHS Hampshire, said: 'We are advising people to set up a network of people so that if someone is diagnosed with swine flu they have someone to pick up their medication for them to minimise the spread of infection.'

In total 255 cases have now been diagnosed in the south-east and 3.254 in the UK by the Health Protection Agency.

It comes just a week after bungling health officials misread lab results and wrongly diagnosed William Grech, from Moneyfields Avenue, Copnor, with the deadly virus.

In fact the 51-year-old – who had returned from a holiday in Turkey the week before – had seasonal flu.

The first case of swine flu in Hampshire was diagnosed last month when a student from Southampton, who has not been named, returned from a trip to the USA.
