Moving tens of thousands will be major challenge for transport role

Pompey's new stadium has received backing from a number of councillors and city council leaders.

But getting tens of thousands of fans to and from the Horsea Island site is one of the biggest issues facing the club.

Mike Hancock, MP for Portsmouth South, said: 'I am delighted they are now in the position to launch and I hope we will see it take shape very quickly.

'The biggest obstacle they will have is highways matters, but if they can get everything in the right sequence I think it will be good for the city.'

David Williams, chief executive of the city council, said: 'I think the plans for the new stadium and arena are very exciting, and the stadium in that location would look stunning.'

Councillor Jim Patey, leader of the Labour party in Portsmouth, said: 'It is extremely exciting, in particular for the north of the city.

'It will help overcome some of the traffic problems we have on match days. The stadium would be quite a distance away from the residential part of Port Solent.

'We have waited a long time for an exciting stadium.'

City council leader Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson said the stadium was 'beautiful'.

But he said the club needed to come up with a workable solution to get 40,000 people in and out.

He added: 'I think the arena is absolutely wonderful, not only providing the opportunity for concerts but also for conferences and all the other economic benefits.'
