MP adds his voice to supermarket veto
AN MP has put his weight behind a campaign to stop a supermarket from opening in a market town.
George Hollingbery, the Tory MP for Meon Valley, has formally objected to Sainsbury's plans for a new store in Bishop's Waltham, saying that the project has failed to prove it will not harm existing shops.
In a letter to Winchester City Council planning department, Mr Hollingbery questioned the retail giant's evidence, saying it was of 'doubtful statistical validity.'
He added: 'The result is that there remain very clear concerns that the development will significantly damage the existing town centre and permission for this unplanned, out of centre supermarket development should not be granted.'
Mr Hollingbery added: 'Although I know there are divided opinions about a supermarket in Bishop's Waltham, I have always said that if there is a risk of harm to the town centre and its wide range of shops, then I would object.
'This issue is very close to my heart because my opposition to a supermarket in Alresford was the reason I went into politics.
'As it stands, I firmly believe this development will harm Bishop's Waltham.'
The deadline for comments on the application is tomorrow. A date has not been set for it go before the planning committee.
