MP backs campaign for lower train fares
A PORTSMOUTH MP is calling for a review of train fares in a bid to get prices lowered.
Mike Hancock is one of 59 MPs backing Campaign for Better Transport, which is demanding lower rail fares for passengers.
The Lib Dem MP said: 'Since 1997 train fares have gone up by seven per cent in real terms.
'I want to see a review of rail fares regulation to make sure that train travel is affordable.'
The campaign wants taking the train made cheaper and easier to encourage more people to use rail services and less people to rely on cars and planes.
Cat Hobbs, public transport campaigner at Campaign for Better Transport, said: 'We're pleased that Mr Hancock has joined a growing number of MPs who are standing up for passengers and saying that fares cannot keep rising above inflation.
'Politicians are realising that the green travel option should be the easy option.'
Experts from the campaign group says fare cuts could be paid for with a fuel tax on domestic flights.
