MP calls for new dog laws

PORTSMOUTH North MP Penny Mordaunt is calling on the government to tighten up dog ownership laws.

Ms Mordaunt wants a bill enforcing a crackdown on the mistreatment of pets to be introduced.

She told ministers at Westminster Hall in London yesterday that there had been numerous incidents in Portsmouth where people and their pets had been attacked by dogs bred to fight.

‘I was there to highlight the dangers to people and their household pets,’ Ms Mordaunt said. ‘One of the case I have dealt with involved a puppy being killed and the owner just walked off. If the dog had been micro-chipped it would have been identifiable.’
