MP supports campaign to save 'important' local newsagents

An MP has pledged his support for a campaign to save newsagents in East Hampshire.

Michael Mates, MP for East Hampshire, has responded to concerns among newsagents over developments in the news distribution industry which mean that many have no choice as to who supplies them.

Shop owners fear that the lack of competition will leave them with no alternative supplier and vulnerable to increased costs.

Mr Mates said: 'I was very alarmed to hear that traditional newsagents are closing down in Britain at a rate of more than one every day.

'Traditional newsagents are an important part of our community. They deliver a vital service.

'Part of the difficulty they face is a lack of competition in the news distribution business. I am happy to pledge my support to newsagents in East Hampshire and across the UK.'

Mr Mates offered his support to the campaign during a meeting at Westminster.
