PORTSMOUTH North MP Penny Mordaunt is one of 40 Conservatives to pen an open letter urging Prime Minister David Cameron to impose tough new press regulations following the Leveson Inquiry.
In a letter to the Guardian the group of influential Tories say they want an independent system, not more muscular self-regulation as advocated by the funding body of the current Press Complaints Commission.
MPs and peers said the Leveson Inquiry represented a ‘once-in-a-generation opportunity to put things right’ and urged the government to ‘create a genuinely independent system’.
Lord Justice Leveson is expected to publish the findings of his inquiry in the next few weeks.
The investigation has heard evidence on phone hacking from celebrities and victims of crime as well as revelations about the close relationship between some politicians and the media.
Brian Cathcart, director of campaign group Hacked Off, said: ‘This is a welcome development.’
