Mystery over cause of Portsmouth man's death
A 58-year-old man died of a disease usually linked to asbestos but was not believed to have ever been exposed to the deadly dust.
An inquest heard how Alan Browne, of Tangier Road, Copnor, Portsmouth, died of mesothelioma on March 18, 2009,
Most cases of the cancer are related to asbestos exposure, normally during work. But Mr Browne had done office work most of his life.
Coroner David Horsley recorded an open verdict, adding: 'Quite clearly he has died from mesothelioma which is generally associated with asbestos. It's very odd for mesothelioma not to be caused by asbestos. There's nothing that could say he was exposed to asbestos at work.'
