Navy ship blows up pirate boat

The navy has blown up a Somalian pirate ship.

HMS Northumberland was too late to save a Greek vessel from being boarded and taken over by the pirates in the Gulf of Aden.

But it was able to sink the skiff they had been using to chase ships carrying food aid parcels and trade cargoes.

Fuel, money, a hooked ladder and two RPG grenades were still on board, and the crew's leaders took the decision to sink the skiff, offering machine gunners and snipers a chance of some target practice.

A Royal Navy spokeswoman said: 'HMS Northumberland is working with a number of other vessels to help keep the Somalian territorial waters safe for civilian and emergency aid-carrying craft.

'She is about to go off-task and will be making her way back to the UK.'
