Navy ships join hunt for couple missing off Seychelles
The Royal Navy was today helping with a search and rescue operation for a British couple who have disappeared in pirate-infested seas.
Two warships were helping in the search for Paul and Rachel Chandler, who sent distress signals while heading for Tanzania from the Seychelles in their yacht, the Lynn Rival.
The service has two Type 22 frigates on anti-piracy duties off Somalia, understood to be HMS Cumberland and HMS Cornwall.
A navy spokesman said: 'We have two ships based off the Horn of Africa which are on alert for any yachts in trouble or any pirate activity.
'But we don't know yet whether this yacht is actually in danger, so our first aim is to get more detail on what has happened.'
A spokesman for the coastguard in the Seychelles said: 'They (the Chandlers) had been headed for Tanzania but we haven't heard from them.
'We don't have any information regarding them. But we did have a distress signal from them on October 23.'
