Navy man's one for the record book

A Naval officer who worked on nuclear submarines has blitzed his degree course to win a top award.

Lieutenant Commander Ade Richardson picked up the Trafalgar Prize for the navy's best postgraduate, after averaging 88 per cent in his master's degree.

A strong score is around the high 60s, but the 36-year-old married father-of-four beat the record at the University of Portsmouth.

Lt Cdr Richardson finished his MSc in engineering and management in July and was presented with his award on Monday at the naval base.

'I was delighted to be given this award,' he said.

'Two thirds of the people on the course are Royal Navy so I hadn't really thought that I would do this well, I am so pleased.

'I enjoyed the work, it was a very interesting course and it will have a direct benefit for my job role.'

Based at HMS Collingwood in Fareham, Lt Cdr Richardson is an underwater weapons specialist running maritime capability trials.

He joined the Navy in 1994 serving with the Sea King helicopters of 848 Squadron and then 846 Squadron for a tour of Northern Ireland. He has served in the Red Sea, the Far East and in Trident nuclear submarines.

His prize was a certificate, glass decanter and bottle of port presented by the University of Portsmouth.
