RESIDENTS are being urged to be wary of strangers who come to their door and ask for money.
The warning comes after an 87-year-old woman was conned into giving £40 to a man who claimed he had locked himself out of a house across the road from where she lives in Henley Road, Southsea.
He asked the pensioner for the money to cover the cost of a taxi to Eastleigh, where he said he was going to get a spare set of keys.
The woman left the man alone downstairs while she went to get the money.
When the man left, he walked in the opposite direction to a taxi rank with the money. The incident happened between 1.50pm and 2.30pm on Thursday, November 22. The man was white, aged between 20 and early thirties, very slim and about 5ft 8in. He had untidy dark brown hair and was unshaven, and wore jeans.
Fratton Detective Constable Stephen Ryan is appealing for anyone who saw a man of this description, or any other suspicious activity in the area on the day of the incident, to contact police on 101.
