New 8,000 home town given green light to join eco scheme

Plans for a new 8,000-home town have been accepted into the government's eco-town scheme.

As reported in yesterday's News, Fareham Borough Council was invited by the government at the last minute to put forward the North of Fareham strategic development area for the scheme.

As a result, the council has been awarded 200,000 to help plan the new 'green' development site, with studies focusing on the provision of green space, waste, water and renewable energy.

Having the development designated as an eco-town means it will have to meet strict criteria about infrastructure, housing standards and green spaces.

Councillor Sen Woodward, leader of the council, said: 'Being given funding to help the development area become an eco-town by the government is great news for Fareham and for the new community we are planning.

'The council's emerging vision for the strategic development area is that, given the scale of development, it will have the services needed to establish its own character and identity, support self containment, whilst delivering high standards of sustainability.

'The funding will help us meet eco-town standards which include the delivery of major infrastructure, such as transport provision to serve the development.'

Fareham expects the first homes to be ready for occupation from around 2016.

The first wave of four eco-towns, including Whitehill Bordon in North Hampshire were approved in July last year and have already receiving large amounts of government funding for eco show homes and hi-tech environmentally friendly features.

Consulations will be held over the future of the SDA. Members of the public interested in taking part should email planningpolicy@fareham.gov.uk or send contact details to Planning Policy at Fareham Borough Council.
