Next store set to take over from Woolies in Fareham
A store left empty since Woolworths collapsed is set to be taken over by Next.
The clothing store has agreed terms with Fareham Shopping Centre to open at a unit in the centre's Western end, where Woolworths had traded until its closure in January.
Next will take the back half of the unit, with internal access from the shopping centre next to Marks & Spencer.
Fareham Borough Council's executive leader, Councillor Sean Woodward, said: 'I'm delighted to hear the heads of terms have been agreed, and that once the legal agreements have been completed, work will begin on transforming the old unit.
'It's excellent news for Fareham and will generate new jobs and new interest in the town centre.'
The former Woolworths store has been empty since the national chain was closed down across the country.
Fareham's branch was one of the last in Hampshire to close, on January 5.
But the soon-to-be- completed deal with Next has focussed attention on the future of the site – and Fareham's wider retail offer.
Cllr Woodward said: 'It's never a good thing to have empty units, so we've all been working hard to make sure the available units are filled.
'Fareham has been less affected by closures than other places, and we have a number of very established High Street names, including Boots, BhS and M&S. Next is another excellent name to come in.'
Cllr Woodward said he also looked forward to seeing the second half of the former Woolworths store filled.
When Next and the centre sign the final legal documents, it is hoped the store will be fitted out and open in time for Christmas.
