Odeon ends cinema life as a legend

A SCREENING of Will Smith's thriller I Am Legend will mark a piece of history at the Odeon in North End, Portsmouth tonight.

The 8.30pm screening will be the last film showing at the landmark building, which is set to be demolished to make way for shops and flats.

Odeon said it has decided to close the cinema because not enough people use it, and it has been sold with a condition that it cannot be set up as a cinema by a rival company.

The 1936 building was supposed to close on November 15 last year, but was delayed until November 29. That date came and went as contract negotiations stalled, and so there was one final Christmas programme. Odeon's Freddy Davies said: 'We would like to thank all the guests who have visited the cinema over the years.

'We would also like to thank the Odeon team members who contributed so much to the running of the cinema.

'We wish management and the rest of the team well for the future.'
